This is a fresh Cookiecutter Shark bite. The shark must not of had a clean bite as normally a perfectly round plug of flesh is removed. This bite shows a flap of skin remaining. Although an ugly wound the unlucky recipient normally heals leaving only a minor scar.
By the late eighteen hundreds had been hunted nearly to extinction. Still rarely seen other than at Guadalupe and San Benitos Islands Baja Mexico.
Range: Channel Islands to Cedros Island Baja Mexico
Species: Arctocephalus townsendi
