Largest of all seals. The species was hunted nearly to extinction for its oil. By the late 1800s there were fewer than 20 known individuals remaining.
Elephant Seals are among the deepest diving marine mammals. Bulls have been documented to dive to depths of over 2600 feet and stay submerged for over 20 minutes.
Females are normally more in the 8 foot range.
