Individuals all begin life as a male then pass through a transitional stage to become females. Mature females produce from 1000 to 3000 eggs in a single spawn.
In Alaska and British Columbia prawns are harvested with traps rather than the highly distructive practice of bottom trawls used for most other shrimp species.
